Mastering the JLPT N5 Kanji and Vocabulary Section

JLPT N5 Exam Structure Overview

Whether you are preparing for the December JLPT to qualify for a student visa or aiming for the JFT-Basic in Kathmandu for your Specified Skilled Worker visa, the N5 level is your foundation. Since Nepali and Japanese share an SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use postpositions (particles), you will find the grammar logic familiar. The exam has two parts: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) and Reading (120 points), and Listening (60 points). To pass, you need 38 points in the first section and 19 in the second.

Question Types: Kanji and Vocabulary

Understanding these patterns is vital for your exam success.

  1. Kanji Reading: Choose the correct Hiragana reading. Example: 山川さん (Yamakawa-san). Distinguish between Onyomi and Kunyomi.
  2. Kanji Writing: Select the correct Kanji for a Hiragana word. Example: きのう (昨, 昨日, 昭, 昔). Watch out for visually similar Kanji like 昨 vs 昭.
  3. Contextual Definition: Complete the sentence. Example: 私は毎日コーヒーを( )ます。 (A. 見, B. 飲み, C. 食べ, D. 聞き). This tests both vocabulary and particle usage.

Common Traps

Don't confuse similar characters like 待つ (matsu) and 持つ (motsu). In 'Contextual Definition', ensure the word makes logical sense, not just grammatical sense. Always read the full sentence.
