How to Master JLPT N5 Point Comprehension

Understanding Point Comprehension (ポイント理解)

The Point Comprehension section (Task 1) of the JLPT N5 listening test consists of 6 items. In this section, you hear a question before the audio starts. Your goal is to listen for one specific piece of information—such as a time, a location, or an object—that answers that question. Because the question is given beforehand, your primary job is to act as a detective, ignoring irrelevant details and waiting for the specific answer.

The Anatomy of a Question

Before the audio begins, you will hear a question like this:

Question: 男の人は何を買いますか。(What will the man buy?)

Audio Script:

Options:

  1. 肉
  2. お茶

In this example, the distractor is the mention of meat (which the woman buys) and tea (which is already at home). The correct answer is 3.

Strategies for Success

  1. Read the Question First: You are given time before the audio plays to read the question. If you do not understand the question, you will likely miss the answer. Focus on the interrogative word

  2. Note-taking: Do not write full sentences. Use symbols or abbreviations. For the example above, you might write: 女=肉, 男=ジュース+ビール. This helps you visualize the division of labor.

  3. Identify Distractors: JLPT N5 listening often uses a 'correction' pattern. Someone suggests something, and then the other person corrects them (e.g., "No, not that, this instead"). Listen for words like 「いいえ」, 「あ、そうですね」, or 「〜じゃなくて」.

Scoring and Exam Structure

The JLPT N5 is scored out of 180 points, with a pass mark of 80. The Listening section accounts for 60 points, and you need at least 19 points to pass this section. With only 6 questions in the Point Comprehension part, every point is valuable. You have roughly 90 minutes for the entire exam, and the listening portion is about 30 minutes. You do not have time to second-guess yourself.

Weekly Study Routine

To improve this week, dedicate 20 minutes daily to 'active listening':
