Mastering the JLPT N2 Vocabulary Usage Section
Understanding the N2 Vocabulary Usage Section
Whether you are preparing for the December JLPT N2 in Nepal or aiming for higher-level work, the Vocabulary Usage section (語彙の用法) is crucial. It appears at the start of the Language Knowledge section. You get a target word and must pick the correct sentence among four. You will face 5 questions. Since Nepali and Japanese share SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use postpositions (particles), you can often map the logic easily. This section tests nuance, collocations, and literal vs. figurative usage.
The Anatomy of the Question
Distractors in N2 are rarely grammatically wrong. They rely on semantic errors—using a word where it doesn't fit. Here is an example:
Target word: むしろ (mushiro)
- 彼は優しいというより、むしろ冷たい人だ。
- むしろは、もっと大きいほうがいい。(Usage error)
- むしろの天気は晴れだろう。(Usage error)
- むしろを食べて、元気になった。(Usage error)
Correct answer: 1. The word むしろ is an adverb. Distractors treat it as a noun, a common trap if you memorize words without context.
Logic Behind the Distractors
Test makers use these categories:
- Category 1: Wrong Part of Speech (e.g., using an adverb as a noun).
- Category 2: Wrong Collocation (unnatural phrasing).
- Category 3: Semantic Confusion (similar-sounding words or kanji).
Timing and Strategy
Language Knowledge is 60 points; you need 19 to pass. Spend max 30 seconds per question. If stuck, eliminate wrong options and guess. Save time for the Reading section, which is vital for your student or work visa goals.
Weekly Study Routine
Stop studying isolated lists. Try this:
- Find 5 N2 words daily.
- Use a monolingual dictionary (Goo or Weblio).
- Write two sentences: one correct, one incorrect (e.g., forcing an adverb into a noun slot).
- Read aloud to internalize the rhythm.
