Mastering the JLPT N2 Text Grammar Section

Understanding the Text Grammar Task

The JLPT N2 Language Knowledge section tests your ability to process grammar in context. Unlike the isolated sentence grammar questions, the 'Text Grammar' (文章の文法) section consists of five short passages (100–250 characters each) with one blank space per passage. You must choose the correct expression from four options to complete the sentence naturally. This section tests cohesion, logical flow, and your grasp of intermediate-level conjunctions and functional phrases.

Strategic Approach

  1. Read the full sentence before and after the blank. Do not look at the options immediately. Your goal is to identify the logical relationship between the sentences.
  2. Look for keywords such as 'しかし' (however), 'つまり' (in other words), or 'したがって' (therefore). These dictate what kind of expression is required.
  3. Check for the viewpoint. Is the author expressing a subjective opinion or stating an objective fact? The ending of the sentence must match the tone of the preceding sentences.
  4. Eliminate distractors. Usually, two options are grammatically incorrect in the context, and one is logically inconsistent with the paragraph's theme.

Worked Example

Consider this passage:

最近の若者は、インターネットで情報を得ることが多い。しかし、情報の信頼性を判断するのは難しい。 ( )、情報の真偽を確かめるスキルが必要とされている。

Options:

  1. それでも
  2. それゆえに
  3. それにもかかわらず
  4. そればかりでなく

Analysis: The first sentence mentions that young people use the internet. The second sentence notes the difficulty of verifying information. The blank follows this difficulty, leading to a conclusion ('skill is needed'). Correct Answer: 2 (それゆえに - therefore/for that reason). Distractor logic: 'それでも' (even so) and 'それにもかかわらず' (nevertheless) imply a contrast, which is incorrect because the conclusion follows logically from the difficulty. 'そればかりでなく' (not only that) adds new information, which does not fit the cause-effect relationship.

Timing and Study Routine

With 180 points total and 19 points required for the Language Knowledge section to pass, you cannot afford to spend too much time on these five questions. Aim to spend no more than 60 seconds per passage. Total time for this section should be about 5 minutes.

Your Study Routine for This Week:

Preparing for the N2 Level

The N2 requires mastery of roughly 1,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words. Because this section tests how grammar interacts with text, reading native-level short editorials or opinion pieces is the best way to improve. When reading, pay attention to the transition words. Ask yourself, 'Why did the author use this connector here?' This habit will build the intuition required for the exam.
