Mastering JLPT N4 Reading Comprehension: Mid-Size Passages

Overview of JLPT N4 Reading Comprehension Section

Whether you are preparing for the Specified Skilled Worker visa (requiring JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic) or a student visa (requiring JLPT N5/NAT-Test), reading comprehension is a core skill. The JLPT is held once a year in Nepal in December, while JFT-Basic is available year-round in Kathmandu. The N4 reading section assesses your ability to understand daily-topic passages. Since Nepali and Japanese both use SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) word order and postpositions (particles), you will find the logical flow familiar once you master the markers.

Within the reading component, the third task type is 内容理解 (Comprehension - Mid-size Passages), which usually features around 4 items. Each item consists of a passage of 350 to 500 characters, followed by a multiple-choice question focusing on a cause, a reason, or a specific detail.

Structure of Mid-Size Passages

Mid-size passages tell a short story or explain an everyday experience. Connectors like だから, しかし, and それで are crucial because they signal shifts in reasoning. Just like Nepali postpositions, Japanese particles help you identify the subject and the reason.

Questions in this task type typically ask:

Worked Example

Let us examine a typical N4-level mid-size passage.

Correct Answer: 1

Distractor Logic

JLPT N4 distractors are designed to trap those who rely on word-matching.

Timing and Study Routine

With the JLPT held annually in December, your practice must be disciplined. Spend no more than 6 to 7 minutes on each mid-size passage.

Study Routine for This Week:

  1. Find two 400-character reading passages at the N4 level.
  2. Read each passage once without looking up words.
  3. Underline sentence connectors and reason markers like から and ので.
  4. Answer the question and write down why each wrong option is incorrect.
