Mastering JLPT N4 Listening: Comprehension of Key Points

Understanding the Task

The Points of Understanding (ポイント理解) section of the JLPT N4 Listening test consists of 7 questions. In this section, you are given a question before the audio starts. You must listen to a dialogue and identify the specific information requested. Because the question is provided first, your primary objective is to listen for the answer to that specific question rather than trying to comprehend every word of the conversation.

The Structure

Each item follows a set pattern:

  1. An English instruction (often omitted in the actual test as it is pre-recorded).
  2. The Japanese question is asked.
  3. The dialogue is played.
  4. You choose from four visual or text-based options.

Worked Example

Question: 男の人は、何を買わなければなりませんか。(What does the man need to buy?)

Options:

  1. ケーキ
  2. 花
  3. 本
  4. 服

Correct answer: 2. 花. The man explicitly concludes his choice at the end: 「花屋さんで花を買うことにするよ」.

Identifying Distractors

Distractors are designed to test your ability to filter irrelevant information. Common traps include:

Strategic Approach

  1. Read the Question First: Use the few seconds of silence before the audio to read the question. If you know you are listening for an object (what to buy) or a time, your brain will filter the dialogue for nouns or time markers.
  2. Take Notes: You are allowed to use the scratch paper provided. Jot down key items mentioned. For example, write 'cake - no', 'flower - yes'. This prevents you from forgetting the context by the time the dialogue ends.
  3. Focus on the Ending: In N4 dialogues, the decision is almost always finalized in the last two sentences. Pay close attention to expressions like 「~ことにします」(I have decided to do X) or 「~しましょう」(Let's do X).
