Mastering JLPT N3 Reading Information Retrieval

Overview of JLPT N3 Information Retrieval

The JLPT N3 Reading section (読解) is scored out of 60 points, where you need a scaled score of at least 19 to pass the section. The entire N3 exam is about 140 minutes long, split across Language Knowledge/Reading and Listening. Within the Reading section, Question 14 is typically Information Retrieval (情報検索). This task is usually worth about 2 items, requiring you to scan a notice, leaflet, timetable, or advertisement to find the exact option that satisfies all stated conditions.

At the N3 level, you are expected to know around 650 kanji and 3,750 vocabulary words. The texts in Information Retrieval feature everyday practical Japanese, such as community center notices, part-time job postings, travel schedules, or discount campaigns. You do not need to read every single word from top to bottom. Instead, you must read the question stem first, identify every constraint, and scan the text to eliminate non-matching options.

Anatomy of the Question Stem

The question stem gives you a specific persona, a goal, and multiple constraints. Common constraints include budget limits, date and time restrictions, membership status, and age requirements. Every single condition matters. If an option satisfies three out of four conditions, it is incorrect.

Let us look at a typical worked example.

Worked Example

Situation

山田さんは来週の水曜日の午後、市内の美術館に行きたいと考えています。入場料が最も安く、かつ午後2時以降に見学できるプランを選びます。

Notice Text

プラン名 曜日 時間 入場料 条件
Aプラン 水曜日・金曜日 10:00 - 16:00 800円 学生限定
Bプラン 水曜日・土曜日 13:00 - 17:00 1000円 一般(予約不要)
Cプラン 毎日 13:00 - 20:00 1200円 夜間割引あり
Dプラン 月曜日・水曜日 14:00 - 18:00 900円 一般(要予約)

Question

山田さんは一般の会社員で、予約をしないで美術館に行きます。どのプランを選びますか。

English Translation of Situation and Question

Mr. Yamada wants to visit the city art museum next Wednesday afternoon. He will choose the plan with the cheapest admission fee that allows visits from 2:00 PM onwards. Mr. Yamada is a general office worker and will go without making a reservation. Which plan does he choose?

Step-by-Step Resolution

  1. Day constraint: Next Wednesday (水曜日). Plans A, B, C, and D all include Wednesday, so none are eliminated yet.
  2. Time constraint: Afternoon from 2:00 PM (14:00) onwards. Plan A starts at 10:00 (too early start, but also check time range). Plan A runs 10:00 - 16:00 (ends after 14:00, but let us check entry). Wait, he wants to go in the afternoon from 14:00. Plan A starts at 10:00, but does it allow entry at 14:00? Let us check rules. Actually, let us look at start times: Plan A starts at 10:00. Plan B starts at 13:00. Plan C starts at 13:00. Plan D starts at 14:00. He wants to go from 14:00 onwards. Plans B, C, and D are open at 14:00. Plan A is also open at 14:00, but let us check user type.
  3. User type constraint: Mr. Yamada is a general office worker (一般), not a student (学生). Plan A requires 学生限定 (Student only). Eliminate Plan A.
  4. Reservation constraint: He will go without making a reservation (予約不要). Plan D requires 要予約 (Reservation required). Eliminate Plan D.
  5. Price and time comparison for remaining plans (B and C): Plan B costs 1000 yen and runs 13:00 - 17:00. Plan C costs 1200 yen and runs 13:00 - 20:00. Both are open at 14:00, both are for general visitors without mandatory reservations. The condition asks for the cheapest admission fee (入場料が最も安く). Plan B is 1000 yen, while Plan C is 1200 yen. Therefore, Plan B is the correct answer.

Distractor Logic

Test makers design distractors using predictable patterns:

Always verify every condition against your chosen option before finalizing your answer.

Timing and Study Routine

Within the N3 Reading section, you should aim to spend no more than 3 to 4 minutes on the Information Retrieval task. Spending too long here deprives you of time for longer passage reading tasks.

To build this skill this week, try the following daily routine:

  1. Collect three flyers, schedules, or informational notices in Japanese from local community sites or Japanese municipal websites.
  2. Write down three specific conditions for each text (e.g., must be under 2000 yen, must occur on a Tuesday, must not require advance booking).
  3. Time yourself finding the matching item within 90 seconds per text.
