Mastering JLPT N2 Reading Information Retrieval

Overview of Information Retrieval in JLPT N2

The JLPT N2 Reading section, or 読解, accounts for 60 points of the total 180-point exam. Whether you are preparing for the December JLPT in Nepal or aiming for the JFT-Basic in Kathmandu, mastering this section is vital. Within the Reading section, Question 13 is typically Information Retrieval, or 情報検索. This task consists of two items based on a single practical text. You must find the one option out of four that satisfies every requirement.

Since Nepali and Japanese share an SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use postpositions (particles like は, が, を), you may find the logic of Japanese sentences familiar. Use this to your advantage when scanning for information.

Step-by-Step Strategy

Do not read the source text first. Read the question stem and conditions first. As you read, note down constraints: date/time, cost, eligibility, and location.

Once you know what to look for, scan the text for keywords. Eliminate options as soon as they violate one condition. Remember, the correct answer must satisfy all conditions. If an option meets the price but fails the membership requirement, it is incorrect.

Worked Example

Consider a simulated question based on a gym membership notice.

Source Text:

Question Stem: 佐藤さんは会社員で、平日の夜(19時以降)に利用したいと考えている。予算は10,000円以下で、会員登録はしたくない。どのプランを選ぶべきか。

Analyzing the Conditions:

  1. Timing: Weekday nights after 19:00. Plan A ends at 17:00 (eliminate). Plan C is weekends only (eliminate).
  2. Budget: 10,000 yen or less. Plan B is 12,000 yen (eliminate).
  3. Membership: No membership registration. Plan A and Plan C require registration. Plan D is for students only. If Mr. Sato is a company employee, Plan D fails the student condition.

Distractor Logic

Test makers use partial matches to distract you. A trap might look cheaper or convenient but violates a negative condition. Always verify every constraint before marking your answer.

Study Routine for This Week

To improve, find Japanese flyers online. Set a timer for 3 minutes and write down three specific extraction tasks. Practice scanning directly for those answers without reading the surrounding text.
