Mastering JLPT N1 Paraphrase Questions (言い換え類義)
Understanding the N1 Paraphrase Task
The JLPT N1 Language Knowledge section tests vocabulary and grammar extensively. The 'Paraphrase' (言い換え類義) section consists of approximately six items. You are presented with a sentence containing an underlined phrase and must choose the option that best conveys the same meaning. These questions test your grasp of nuance, formal register, and advanced collocation.
Worked Example
Consider the following question:
問題:最近の若者は、伝統的な価値観を軽視する傾向がある。
- 伝統的な価値観を大切にしようとする姿勢が見られる。
- 伝統的な価値観を重要視しないことが多い。
- 伝統的な価値観を完全に否定しなければならないと考えている。
- 伝統的な価値観を維持することが難しいと感じている。
Analysis: The target phrase is 「軽視する傾向がある」 (have a tendency to make light of/disregard).
- Option 1 is the opposite meaning.
- Option 2 (重要視しない - do not place importance on) aligns perfectly with 軽視する (to make light of).
- Option 3 introduces an extremist nuance (completely deny) not present in the original.
- Option 4 introduces a sense of difficulty/burden not present in the original.
Correct Answer: 2
Distractor Logic
N1 distractors are designed to exploit common learner pitfalls:
- Semantic Overlap: The distractor uses a kanji from the original sentence to trick you into choosing it, even if the grammatical connection is wrong.
- Nuance Inflation: The distractor adds a degree of intensity (like 'completely' or 'always') that the original sentence lacks.
- Register Mismatch: The distractor uses the correct meaning but a casual tone that conflicts with the formal nature of the N1 stem.
Timing and Exam Strategy
The Language Knowledge section (Vocabulary/Grammar) is worth 60 points of the total 180. With only 170 minutes total for the entire N1 exam, you should aim to complete the Paraphrase section in under 4 minutes. If you spend more than 40 seconds per question, you are likely overthinking or lacking the necessary vocabulary breadth (10,000+ words).
Weekly Study Routine
To improve your performance this week, implement the following:
- Active Paraphrasing: Take 5 news articles from a site like NHK News Web. Highlight three sentences per article and rewrite the core predicate using different vocabulary while keeping the same meaning.
- Collocation Mapping: When learning new N1-level verbs, list their antonyms and at least two synonyms. For instance, if you learn 軽視する, immediately pair it with 重視する (antonym) and おろそかにする (synonym).
- Timed Drills: Set a timer for 5 minutes and attempt 8-10 paraphrase practice questions. Focus on identifying the 'subject-predicate' core of the sentence first, as N1 distractors often hide the difference in the modifying clauses.
