Mastering JLPT N1 Listening Comprehension of Key Points

Structure of the Point Comprehension Task

Whether you are aiming for the JLPT N4 for your Specified Skilled Worker visa, N5 for your student visa, or N1 for advanced study, listening is a core skill. The JLPT N1 listening section takes roughly 60 minutes. Within this, the first task is ポイント理解 (Comprehension of Key Points), featuring about 6 questions. Since Nepali and Japanese both use SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) word order and rely on postpositional particles (like Japanese は, が, を), you may find the sentence structure familiar. Point Comprehension tests if you can extract a single, crucial piece of information from a dialogue.

The format is strict. First, you hear the instruction. Second, you hear the Japanese question (also printed in your booklet). Third, you listen to a dialogue. Fourth, the question is repeated, and you choose from four options. Because you see the question before the dialogue, your task is listening with a target.

Pre-Reading Strategy

Use the pause before the audio to read the printed question and options. Never wait for the audio. If the question asks 何について相談しているか (What are they consulting about?), filter out filler and hunt for the core problem. If it asks 男の人はこの後まず何をしなければならないか (What must the man do first after this?), listen for sequence markers and imperative forms like しておかなければならない or まず〜しよう.

Worked Example

Consider this N1 business scenario.

Printed Question: 男の人はこの後まず何をしなければならないか (What must the man do first after this?)

Options:

  1. 企画書の修正版を取引先に送る
  2. 会議室の予約状況を確認する
  3. 上司に新しい提案について相談する
  4. メンバー全員にスケジュールをメールで変更の連絡する

Dialogue Script:

In this script, the man suggests sending the document and rebooking the room. The woman corrects him: she will send the document, and he must check the room first. The correct option is 2 (会議室の予約状況を確認する).

Distractor Logic

Test writers use distractors to trap those who rely on partial listening. Option 1 is the man's initial thought. Option 4 is the second step, but the question asks what he must do first (まず). To defeat distractors, pay attention to connectors like いや or 待てよ, and corrections given by a superior.

Training Routine for This Week

Whether you are preparing for the December JLPT or year-round JFT-Basic, consistency is key. Dedicate 20 minutes daily to active listening:

  1. Select one audio track of business news or a podcast.
  2. Write down your own question based on the topic before listening.
  3. Listen once without pausing, jotting down key action verbs.
  4. Check the transcript to see if you caught the turning point where the final decision was made.
