JLPT Test Day Procedures: Rules, Materials, and Timing

Required Documents and Materials

Whether you are aiming for the JLPT N4 for your Specified Skilled Worker visa or N5 for your language school student visa, you must bring your official Test Voucher (受験票) and a valid photo ID. You are strictly allowed only a pencil (HB or B) and an eraser. Pens, mechanical pencils, and sharpeners are generally prohibited. You cannot use a watch that has smart functions; only a simple analog or digital clock is permitted. Any electronic device, including smartphones, must be turned off and placed in your bag. If a phone rings or vibrates, you will be disqualified immediately.

Answer Sheet Protocols

The JLPT uses a mark-sheet system. Since Japanese and Nepali share a similar SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use particles (postpositions), you are likely familiar with how word order functions. However, on the mark-sheet, you must fill the circle completely. If you change your answer, erase the first mark thoroughly. Leaving a ghost mark can cause the scanner to register two answers, resulting in no points.

Example: Filling the Sheet

When you see a question like: "彼は毎日[ ]を読みます。" with options (1) 本 (2) 水 (3) 車 (4) 山, you must fill the circle corresponding to (1) completely. Do not mark the kanji character itself on the paper; only the number on the sheet.

Section Order and Timing

The test order follows Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar), Reading, and Listening. Whether you are taking the annual December JLPT or the JFT-Basic in Kathmandu, time management is key. A common trap is spending too much time on Vocabulary, leaving insufficient time for the long Reading comprehension passages. Aim to complete the Vocabulary and Grammar sections quickly, leaving ample time for Reading.

Rules That Void Your Paper

Prohibited actions include opening your test booklet before the proctor gives the signal, continuing to write after the "stop" command, or talking to other examinees. Taking photos of the test paper or removing any part of the test material from the room is a severe violation. If you are caught looking at notes during the break, you may be disqualified. Always keep your answer sheet and test booklet clearly visible on your desk.

This Week's Study Routine

  1. Timed Practice: Select one Reading section from a practice workbook. Set a timer for 60 minutes and do not pause for any reason.
  2. Answer Sheet Simulation: Print a sample answer sheet and practice filling in circles quickly and neatly.
  3. Environment Control: Clear your desk of all items except a pencil and eraser to simulate the exam environment.
  4. Listening Prep: Listen to one full N-level mock listening section to build stamina for the final part of the exam.
