JLPT N5 Reading Comprehension: Mastering Mid-Size Passages for Your Exam
Overview of JLPT N5 Reading Comprehension
Whether you are preparing for the December JLPT to meet the Specified Skilled Worker visa requirements or aiming for a student visa, the N5 exam is your first major milestone. To pass, you need a total score of 80 out of 180, with the Language Knowledge (Vocabulary and Grammar) and Reading section scored together from 0 to 120 (passing mark is 38). Since Japanese and Nepali share a similar SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use postpositional particles, you may find the word order intuitive. Aim for 150 to 300 study hours, covering 100 kanji, 800 vocabulary words, and 80 basic grammar points.
Within the Reading section, the third task type is 内容理解(中文), or Reading Comprehension (Mid-size Passages). This features a Japanese text of 350 to 500 characters. Because the text is longer than short messages, you need a strategy to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Structure and Timing Strategy
For the entire N5 reading test, spend no more than 15 to 20 minutes on the reading section. For a mid-size passage, budget about 4 to 5 minutes.
- Read the question stem first. Knowing what you are looking for—such as a specific reason or a schedule—allows you to scan the text effectively.
- Read through the passage once at a steady pace to grasp the main narrative.
- Look at the four multiple-choice options. Compare them against the relevant section of the text.
Worked Example and Distractor Logic
Let us examine a typical N5-level mid-size passage.
Sample Passage
先週の土曜日、私は友達の田中さんと一緒に図書館へ行きました。田中さんは来週の試験のために、日本語の本を探していました。私は本を読むのが好きですから、自分で読む小説を借りました。図書館の中はとても静かで、勉強しやすかったです。お昼ごはんの時間になったので、私たちは近くのレストランへ行きました。そこでラーメンを食べて、いろいろな話をしました。とても楽しい一日でした。
Translation
Last Saturday, I went to the library together with my friend Tanaka-san. Tanaka-san was looking for a Japanese book for next week's exam. Because I like reading books, I borrowed a novel to read myself. The inside of the library was very quiet, making it easy to study. When it became lunchtime, we went to a nearby restaurant. There, we ate ramen and talked about various things. It was a very fun day.
Question
質問:田中さんはなぜ図書館へ行きましたか。 Question: Why did Tanaka-san go to the library?
Options
- 日本語の本を借りるため (To borrow a Japanese book)
- 小説を読むため (To read a novel)
- 友達とラーメンを食べるため (To eat ramen with a friend)
- 勉強をするため (To study)
Analyzing the Options and Distractors
The correct answer is option 1. The passage states: 田中さんは来週の試験のために、日本語の本を探していました。Test writers use common distractor techniques:
- Option 2 refers to the speaker (私), not Tanaka-san. Distractors frequently mix up who performed which action.
- Option 3 mentions eating ramen, which happened later at a restaurant. Distractors reuse familiar vocabulary (like ラーメン) but distort the location.
- Option 4 mentions studying, but the passage states the library was easy to study in, not that Tanaka-san went specifically to study.
Study Routine for This Week
To improve before your test, follow this three-step routine:
- Character Count Target: Write one short Japanese diary entry of 100 characters daily using basic N5 kanji (such as 行く, 読む, 食べる). This builds stamina.
- Timed Practice: Find a 300-character paragraph. Set a timer for 4 minutes. Read it once and answer a comprehension question.
- Error Log: Whenever you choose an incorrect distractor, write down why it was wrong (e.g., 'confused the speaker with the friend'). Review this before your next session.
