JLPT N4 Vocabulary Section Guide: Question Types, Traps, and Study Routine

JLPT N4 Vocabulary Section Overview

The JLPT N4 exam tests your foundational Japanese ability across daily-life topics. The entire test takes roughly 115 minutes. Scoring is divided into two sections: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) and Reading combined (0–120 points, requiring a minimum of 38 to pass), and Listening (0–60 points, requiring 19 to pass). At the N4 level, you are expected to know roughly 300 kanji and 1,500 vocabulary words. Note that the official organization does not publish past papers, so you should rely on well-designed practice materials that mirror the official question formats.

Official Question Types (問題)

The Language Knowledge vocabulary portion consists of specific standardized question types. Understanding what each asks you to do prevents wasted time on test day.

問題1: 漢字読み (Kanji Reading)

You are given a sentence with a underlined kanji word and must choose the correct hiragana reading from four options.

Example: きょうは 病院 へ行きます。

  1. びょういん
  2. びよういん
  3. ぴょういん
  4. ぴよういん

Correct Answer: 1 (びょういん). The traps here involve subtle sound changes like small ツ, voiced consonants (dakuten), or confusing similar kanji compounds like 美容院 (びよういん).

問題2: 表記 (Orthography / Kanji Writing)

You are given a sentence with a hiragana word and must choose the correct kanji spelling from four options.

Example: あした てんき になります。

  1. 天気
  2. 天気
  3. 天氣
  4. 天気 (with slight typographical differences in practice books)

Ensure you distinguish between visually similar kanji elements.

問題3: 文脈規定 (Context-Defining Expressions)

You must choose the vocabulary word that best fits the blank space in a given sentence based on meaning and usage.

Example: かばんが重いので、少し [ ] ください。

  1. もってください
  2. あけてください
  3. つれていってください
  4. はいってください

Correct Answer: 1. This tests whether you know which verb collocates correctly with physical objects like bags.

問題4: 言い換え類義 (Paraphrase)

You must choose a word or phrase that has the same or very similar meaning to the underlined word in the sentence.

Example: この部屋は ひろい です。

  1. おおきい
  2. あたらしい
  3. きれいな
  4. しずかな

Correct Answer: 1 (in the context of room dimensions, ひろい aligns closely with おおきい).

問題5: 用法 (Usage)

You are given a vocabulary word and must choose the option sentence where that word is used correctly.

Example: 【しんぱい】

  1. あしたはテストですが、よく勉強したからしんぱいありません。
  2. )=

This tests deep semantic understanding rather than simple translation.

Common Traps to Avoid

  1. Over-relying on English translations: N4 vocabulary requires understanding Japanese nuance and particles.
  2. Ignoring small kana: Misreading っ or ん accounts for a massive percentage of avoidable errors.
  3. Learning kanji in isolation: Always learn vocabulary words in full compound contexts.
