How to Master JLPT N2 Listening Point Comprehension

Overview of Point Comprehension

The Point Comprehension section (ポイント理解) is the first task in the JLPT N2 listening test. It is worth roughly six items out of the total listening score of 60 points. In this task, you hear a question first, then a conversation, and finally you must choose the correct answer from four printed options. Crucially, the question is printed neither in the test booklet nor on the audio. You must listen to the question at the very beginning of each item and remember it while listening to the subsequent dialogue.

To pass the N2 listening section with a scaled score of at least 19 out of 60, you need a reliable strategy for isolating the key information. The dialogue usually features two speakers discussing a plan, a problem, or a schedule. One person will state an initial idea, the other will object or offer a modification, and the first speaker will agree. The answer is almost always found in this final consensus.

Structure of a Practice Item

Let us look at a concrete example of a practice item designed to match N2 difficulty. Remember that this is an original practice exercise, not a published past paper.

First, you hear the English instruction and the Japanese question:

(A man and a woman are talking about their upcoming schedule. What must the man do first after this?)

Next, you hear the dialogue script:

Finally, you look at the four options:

Worked Example and Distractor Logic

In this example, the correct answer is 3. Here is how the dialogue leads you to this conclusion and how the distractors attempt to trick you:

Actionable Study Routine for This Week

To improve your score on this specific task without wasting time, use this daily routine for the upcoming week:

  1. Active Memo-Taking: During practice sessions, write down keywords as you hear the question. If the question asks what to do first, write down the target person and time markers like まず or この後.
  2. Identify the Pivot: Listen for contrast markers such が, けど, and だけど, or agreement phrases like そうしよう and 分かった. The key point almost always follows these conjunctions.
  3. Review Distractors: After checking your answers, do not just look at why the correct answer is right. Write down why each of the other three options was explicitly rejected in the audio.
