How to Ace JLPT N5 Task-Based Comprehension

Overview of N5 Task-Based Comprehension

The listening section of the JLPT N5 exam, which you might be taking this December in Kathmandu or preparing for your 150-hour certificate for your student visa, lasts about 30 minutes and contributes 60 points to your total score of 180. To pass the listening section, you need a scaled score of at least 19 out of 60. The first task type you will encounter is 課題理解 (Kadai Rikai, or Task-Based Comprehension), which usually consists of about 7 questions.

In this section, you hear a short conversation between two people, followed by a question asking what the main speaker should do next. Before the audio plays, you will hear an English instruction, but the question and the four options are printed only in Japanese on your test paper. You must look at the options before the audio starts to know what to listen for.

The Anatomy of a Question

Every question follows a strict pattern:

  1. An English voice gives the direction.
  2. The audio plays a conversation.
  3. A narrator asks a question in Japanese, such as「男の人はこのあと、まず何をしますか。」 (What does the man do first after this?)
  4. You select one of four choices.

Let us look at a concrete worked example.

Worked Example

Printed on your test paper:

Question audio: 男の人はこのあと、まず何をしますか。

English Translation of the Dialogue: Man: Teacher, I borrowed this book. When should I return it? Woman: Please return it next Monday. Ah, we are on holiday starting tomorrow, so please bring it to the office on Monday morning. Man: Yes, I understand. Well then, tomorrow, while I am out shopping, I will buy a notebook. Woman: Oh, the notebook will be used in next week's class, so you do not need to buy it today. More than that, many people forgot their pens, so please prepare pens. Man: Understood. Then, I will go to the stationery shop right now and buy them.

Analyzing the Correct Answer

In this scenario, the correct option is 2 (ペンを買う - Buy pens). The man initially mentions buying a notebook, but the woman corrects him, saying it is not needed today. She instead asks him to prepare pens, and the man explicitly agrees to go buy them right now.

Distractor Logic

Test makers design distractors using specific traps:

Always listen for changes introduced by words like「でも」 (but),「ちょっと待って」 (wait a minute), or corrections made by the second speaker.

Timing and Pacing

Because there are about 7 items in this section, pacing is critical. You have only a few seconds between questions. Use the silent period before each audio track to read all four options on the page. If you spend too much time thinking about a previous question, you will miss the preview time for the next one. If you are unsure, guess quickly and immediately read the options for the next item.

Study Routine for This Week

To improve your Task-Based Comprehension score this week, follow this daily routine:

  1. Monday to Wednesday: Listen to one N5 practice track daily without looking at the transcript. Force your ear to catch keywords like 「まず」 (first), 「あとで」 (later), and time markers like 「明日」 (tomorrow) or 「今日」 (today).
  2. Thursday: Review the transcripts of the tracks you practiced. Circle every verb at the end of sentences, as N5 tasks always center on actions.
  3. Friday and Saturday: Do a timed mock test of 7 items. Force yourself to look at the printed options before the audio starts, exactly as you would in the exam room.
