Complete JLPT N1 Exam Structure, Scoring, and Requirements for Nepal
What JLPT N1 Certifies
JLPT N1 is the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. While many in Nepal start with N5 or N4 for student or Specified Skilled Worker visas, N1 represents the peak of academic and professional fluency. It certifies the ability to understand Japanese used in a wide variety of circumstances. Because Nepali and Japanese share an SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure and use postpositional particles, you may find the word order intuitive. However, N1 requires comprehending logical complexities in newspapers and academic texts. Learners must follow native-speed conversations with ease.
Time Limits and Exam Sections
The N1 test format is split into two booklets, totaling roughly 170 minutes. Since the JLPT in Nepal is held once a year in December, ensure your practice matches this high-stakes environment.
Section 1: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) and Reading
- Time Limit: 110 minutes
- Weight: 120 points total (60 for Language Knowledge, 60 for Reading)
- Overview: This tests your lexical depth and reading comprehension. Use your knowledge of particles (like は, が, を) to parse complex sentences.
Section 2: Listening
- Time Limit: Roughly 55 minutes
- Weight: 60 points total
- Overview: Audio prompts test your real-time processing of fast-paced dialogues.
Scoring Architecture and Sectional Pass Marks
The total score required to pass is 100 out of 180 points. The exam enforces strict minimum sectional thresholds, known as 足切り (Ashikiri). To pass, you must score at least 19 out of 60 in each category:
- Language Knowledge (Vocabulary and Grammar): 0 to 60 points (Minimum: 19)
- Reading: 0 to 60 points (Minimum: 19)
- Listening: 0 to 60 points (Minimum: 19)
If you score 120 points overall but earn only 18 in Listening, you will fail. Balanced preparation is mandatory.
Volume of Study: Kanji, Vocabulary, and Grammar
To reach N1, you need 1,500 to 2,800 hours of study.
- Kanji: Roughly 2,000 characters.
- Vocabulary: Roughly 10,000 words.
- Grammar Points: Roughly 250 advanced patterns.
Consider this N1 grammar pattern:
例文:この新薬の効果は、臨床試験の結果を待つまでもない。安全性に懸念はない。 訳:The efficacy of this new drug goes without waiting for the results of clinical trials. There are no safety concerns.
In this example, the grammar pattern 〜までもない means that something is unnecessary.
