Expressing ability to do something or the possibility of an action occurring.

Rule

For Ichidan verbs, replace the final ru with reru. For Godan verbs, change the final u-row vowel to the corresponding e-row vowel and add ru. For irregular verbs, suru becomes dekiru and kuru becomes koreru.

Worked examples

食べる (たべる) → 食べられる (たべられる) 読む (よむ) → 読める (よめる) 来る (くる) → 来られる (られる)
