Used for

Expressing that the subject receives the action of a verb, often used for adverse or indirect effects.

Rule

For Ichidan verbs, replace ru with rareru. For Godan verbs, change the final u-row vowel to the a-row vowel and add reru. For irregular verbs, suru becomes sareru and kuru becomes korareru.

Worked examples

褒める (ほめる) → 褒められる (ほめられる) 書く (かく) → 書かれる (かかれる) 見る (みる) → 見られる (みられる)
