Used for: Expressing passive voice (the subject receives the action) or suffering passive.
Rule: Ichidan: Drop る and add られる. Godan: Change the final u-row sound to the a-row and add れる. Irregular: する -> される, くる -> こられる.
Worked examples: 食べる -> 食べられる, 書く -> 書かれる, する -> される
Exceptions: Godan verbs ending in う change to われる (e.g., 買う -> 買われる).
