Expressing a past state for a na-adjective.

Rule

Drop any trailing na and append だった (datta) to the na-adjective stem.

Worked examples

静か → 静かだった (shizuka → shizukadatta), 便利 → 便利だった (benri → benridatta), 親切 → 親切だった (shinsetsu → shinsetsudatta)

Exceptions

In formal contexts, だった is replaced by でした (deshita).
