How it works

Attaches to the plain form of predicates to express surprise or dissatisfaction that an unexpected result occurred.

Example

Benkyou shita noni, shiken ni ochimashita. Even though I studied, I failed the exam.

Versus

から (kara) means 'because', which expresses cause, whereas のに (noni) expresses a contradictory outcome.
