JLPT N2 Overview
What N2 Certifies
The JLPT N2 certifies the ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations and in a variety of circumstances to a certain degree. It is widely accepted by Japanese universities and companies as proof of business-level or academic functional competence.
Test Sections & Time Limits
- Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) & Reading (言語知識（文字・語彙・文法）・読解): 105 minutes
- Listening (聴解): 50 minutes
Scoring & Passing Criteria
- Total Score: 180 points
- Overall Pass Mark: 90 / 180 points (50%)
- Sectional Pass Marks (must pass all three section benchmarks):
- Language Knowledge: 19 / 60 points
- Reading: 19 / 60 points
- Listening: 19 / 60 points
Knowledge Scope
- Kanji: ~1,000 kanji
- Vocabulary: ~6,000 words
- Grammar: Intermediate to upper-intermediate sentence patterns (~200 grammar points)
